the Itaipu Hydroelectric Power Plant, the latest in the world, is a bi-national joint venture on the Parana River, between Brazil and Paraguay. the installed capacity of the power plant was 12,000,000 Kilowatts. Now days it contains 20 generators with a 700,000 Kilowatts capacity each. Its installed capacity is 14,000,000 kilowatts. In 2000, Itaipu produced 93.4 billion kilowatt-hours, a record of production that has never been help b any other power plant in the world. the power plant is responsible for 90% of the energy consumed in Paraguay and 25% of that consumed in Brazil. (Brazilian population: 190 million inhabitants)
The power plant is a major tourist attraction in the Foz do iguacu area, and has received millions of visitors from around the glove. Tours included a film about the construction which took seven years and 30,000 people, and a us trip around the dam to various point of interest.
USA citizens required a visa which must be acquired in the USA and it will be around $180 per person in order to cross from Argentina side to the Brazilian side and tour the Itaipu Dam.
