Colonial de Sacramento Uruguay
This XVII century Portuguese settlement, which was founded in 1680 as a military bastion, was an object of controversy between Spain and Portugal due to its significant and strategic position on the river Plata. Our tour includes transfer to the port to board a modern ferry to sail across the River Plate, city tour, ferry back to Buenos Aires and transfer to the hotel. Upon arrival, we will visit the "Plaza mayor" (Main Square), the cobbled "Callede Los Suspiros" (streets of Sights) leading to the ricer, the San Miguel bastion with its lighthouse rising amid colonial ruins, and the Portuguese, Spanish and Colonial Museums. Built in Portuguese style of houses and cobblestoned streets, the historic portion of Colonia is reminiscent of old Lisbon. Winding streets and colorful houses are laid out in a pattern different from Spanish colonial cities, and a delight to explore. We will be able to see Portuguese stoned houses with their traditional four sloped roofs, alternating with flat roofed Spanish colonial houses with with washed walls, which have remained as tokens of the struggle for dominating the enclave.
